Eco-friendly packaging for corporate gifts means paper, kraft, bamboo, jute or cotton in place of laminated board and plastic, packaging the recipient keeps and reuses, and no more material than the gift actually needs. If your company has an ESG or sustainability policy, that is the standard your packaging line has to meet, and it has to meet it in words you can defend when someone asks.

This guide walks through five ready-stock packaging items held in our warehouse and says what each one is made of. Some of them are a single natural material. A few mix natural material with a plastic component, and this article says so where it applies, because sustainable gift packaging in Malaysia goes wrong when a mixed item is described as if it were pure. For box styles, compartments and fillers in general, read our guide on how to pack a corporate gift set.

What "eco-friendly" should mean on a procurement sheet

Four things make packaging genuinely lower-impact. None of them need a claim you cannot back up.

  • Material you can name. "Kraft paper", "bamboo" and "5oz cotton" are checkable. "Green packaging" is not.
  • Reuse after the gift is opened. A pouch, a case or a bag that stays in use is doing more work than a box that goes straight to the bin.
  • Right-sized and flat-packed. A box cut to the gift uses less board and less transport volume, so start from matching the box size to the gift rather than ordering one large size for everything.
  • Honest labelling of mixed materials. If there is a foam insert or a clear plastic panel, write it on the sheet. A buyer who finds it later trusts nothing else you wrote.

Paper and kraft

KRAFT Notebook with Pen Gift Box

The KRAFT notebook and pen gift box is 350g kraft paper in a lid-and-base format, with two shaped compartments in the base: one well for an A5 notebook and a narrow one for a pen. It measures 235 x 195 x 20mm in natural kraft colour, and the maker describes it as eco-friendly and recyclable. There is no foam and no window, so the whole box is one material. It stores and stacks flat, which keeps storage and transport volume down. Logo goes on by silk screen or UV print. The notebook and pen are not included, so you pair it with your own stock.

Two other paper options are worth knowing. The recycled paper USB box is brown recycled paper with a fixed shaped insert inside to hold the drive, made in sizes to suit the pen you choose, printed by silk screen. And colour shredded paper in white, grey, navy blue, black, red or green is a paper filler you can use instead of plastic void fill; the box is not included.

Bamboo and wood

Eco-Bamboo USB Box

The bamboo USB box has a bamboo body with a flip-top closure and a large flat lid that takes a logo well. It measures 110 x 55 x 30mm with a natural finish, and takes silk screen, laser engraving or UV print. Be accurate about the inside: the insert is EVA sponge cut to the shape of the drive you choose, so it is foam, not bamboo. The box is a mixed-material item and should be listed that way. What it has going for it is that the outer shell is a hard natural material the recipient tends to keep on a desk rather than throw away.

Plant fibre blends

Eco-Wheat Storage Box

The wheat storage box is wheat straw blended with food-grade PP, in a natural colour, 245 x 62 x 30mm, with silkscreen printing. It is a slim lidded case sized for cutlery, stationery or cosmetics, and that is exactly how to describe it in a brief: reusable packaging the recipient keeps, usually as a case for a cutlery or straw set. Do not call it biodegradable or compostable. It contains plastic, and a blend behaves like a blend. Sold as the storage box only; the item inside and the outer packaging are not included, so plan those separately.

Natural fabric that gets kept

Small Jute Rattan Handle Packaging

This small jute bag with a rattan handle measures 165 x 150 x 10mm and comes in natural, pink, red, turquoise and white. The weave is stiff enough for the bag to stand up on a table display, which suits a launch counter or a registration desk. The front panel is a clear plastic window, so the bag is jute plus rattan plus a plastic panel and should be written down that way. It is sized for a candle, a soap set, tea or a small keepsake. Logo goes on by silk screen or heat transfer. Recipients keep this one and use it again.

Cotton Drawstring Pouch-L 5oz (200x200)

The 5oz cotton drawstring pouch is white, 200 x 200mm, with a drawstring closure and no plastic parts. It is one material throughout, which makes it the simplest item here to justify on a sustainability sheet. It suits crafts, coffee beans, tea leaves, stationery and small gifts, and the large flat panel takes a silk screen logo cleanly. Cotton pouches get reused for pencils, cables, travel toiletries and loose change long after the event is over. When you want packaging that outlives the gift, this is usually the one to start from.

Printing on natural materials without undoing the point

Choose the method to suit the surface. Laser engraving on bamboo uses no ink at all and marks the material itself, so there is nothing added to the box. Silk screen suits kraft, jute and cotton. UV print suits kraft board and holds detail on a flat lid or panel. UV print, laser engraving and UV DTF are run in-house, which means those jobs sit on our own schedule and a mid-run artwork change is sorted the same day rather than waiting on an outside printer. Other methods are available, and our sales team will recommend by product and by artwork once they see your file.

How to write the packaging line in a tender or brief

  1. Name the material. Write "350g kraft paper" or "5oz cotton", not "eco packaging".
  2. State single-material or mixed. If there is a foam insert or a clear plastic panel, say so on the same line.
  3. Ask for flat-pack where available, so you are not shipping and storing air.
  4. Ask what the recipient keeps. If the answer is nothing, rethink the format.

Ordering and lead time

All five items are held in our own warehouse in Selangor, with nationwide delivery across Malaysia. Printing normally takes 5 to 14 working days after artwork is confirmed and payment is received, so build that into your event date rather than counting back from it. Browse the full range of packaging boxes to compare formats, and look at our specialty gifts if you want the gift inside to sit alongside the packaging in the same brief. Talk to our sales team with your gift dimensions and artwork, and we will tell you what fits and what prints well.

FAQ

Is kraft paper packaging recyclable in Malaysia?

Plain kraft board with no lamination and no plastic window is accepted as paper by recyclers in most areas, though collection differs by council and by facility, so check locally before you make a claim in print. The kraft box in this article is described by the maker as recyclable and has no window or foam. Keep it clean and dry and flatten it, because food residue and adhesive tape are the usual reasons paper is rejected.

Is bamboo packaging better than paper?

Neither is automatically better; it depends on what happens after the gift is opened. Bamboo is a hard natural material that people tend to keep, so the packaging stays in use. Paper and kraft are lighter, pack flatter and go into an existing paper recycling stream. If the bamboo box has a foam insert, that insert is not recyclable with the shell, which counts against it. Choose bamboo when the recipient will keep the box, and kraft when the box is a one-trip carrier.

Does a PVC window make a kraft box non-recyclable?

The window and the board are different materials, so they should be separated before the board goes for recycling. A plastic window left in place can cause the whole item to be rejected as contaminated paper, which is why mixed items need to be flagged on the sheet. None of the boxes in this article has a PVC window. The jute bag does have a clear plastic front panel, and that is a fabric item rather than board, but it still counts as mixed material.

Yes, and the method should match the material. Laser engraving marks bamboo with no ink. Silk screen works on kraft, jute and cotton. UV print works on kraft board and holds finer detail. Flat panels print better than curved or heavily textured ones, so the bamboo lid and the cotton pouch panel are the easiest surfaces here.
